In the proposal the softer modes of transportation combined with a dense architectural approach are among the key factors in developing the neighborhood.

The new urban development of Keldur offers a wide range of possibilities to dwell in the realm of nature. Maybe not the vast open landscapes of Iceland, but the smaller and more everyday landscapes of sub-urban Reykjavik. The area holds a certain rurality and is at the same time heavily influenced by the surrounding urban fabric of the Icelandic capital.
In developing the area, we suggest creating common grounds mixing the rural and suburban potential in new sub-urbanities. By creating a build outer edge along the Vesturlandsvegur we can create a metabolistic inner structure with a multi mixed architectural, functional, and structural appearance. This creates new communities entangled with the existing terrain, nature, and structures. In other words a neighborhood that can grow and adapt over time.
Developing towards circularity and sustainable cities, Keldur can play an essential part as showcase and business case on how to deal with the challenges of modern way of life. The Borgalína are suggested as an internal spine or backbone – an urban strip through the area where people, rather than cars, create the urban scenery. It is a sloping and curving urban fabric that holds the potential of connecting different nodes of urban relevance – like pearls on a string. The different sub-urbanities are shaped around and linked to the Borgalína creating the possibility for a car-free quarter.
